Survival, A battle to the finish

Photos and Model by: Arvin Lim

This diorama is my first shot at diorama making, it was entered in CMC's best diorama contest last 2002, sadly it never did get anything :( . Well it was mostly a hurried and half baked effort so I guess it was fine:), I decided to reuse the GM and the Zaku afterwards and made the Duel Diorama

A) THE DIORAMA

The main materials used for the base and the cliff are styrofoam boards, some blue colored clear glue, 1/100 scale model trees, model grass, 1/100 Model Kubelwagen,Barrels,Jerry cans, and a forest backround from the 1/144 V Gundam kits.

The styrofoam boards were shaped by adding some acetone to the surface to give it a landscaped texture. The base was then painted mostly green, and the cliff was painted gray. The stream was simulated by using some blue colored clear glue. to add an overall forest terrain effect three shades of green modelling grass were applied all over the base and the cliffs and some brown was applied to reperesent the brown soil of the forest.

Some 1/100 scale model trees, were places on the edges of the diorama, and some jerry cans, barrels, and a flipped Kubelwagen vehicle was added to clearly define the MS's size. As a final touch some forest backrounds from the 1/144 v gundam models were used to enhance the 3D look of the whole diorama.

C) THE MODELS

The Kits used are the Master Grade RGM -79 GM kit and the MS-06F Zaku II kit both from the 0079 series. The GM was mostly built out of the box but most of the modifications came from the modular damage parts, and the Zaku was a little bit modified to reperesent a souped up high mobility prototype much like the Zaku F2's used in the 0083 ova. both kits were sanded and glued where they were needed.

Main modifications to the Zaku were the addition of extra armor parts on the forehead, crotch and right shoulder, that came from the MG detail up parts and some panels from AFV military kits, a rolled up canvass and some handles attached to the shield, rivets on the skirt armor and knees (much like the Zaku F2), extra boosters in the legs and the backpack, and a little modification on the lower torso armor to allow greater mobility of the skirt armors and the thighs.

The paintjob is a custom desert scheme mix , and the weathering was done using dry brushed silver and black chalk pastel. Finally a coat of Mr. Super clear flat was sprayed on to even out the paint.

D) WEATHERING

Weathering was done using black and brown chalk pastels to simulate smoke stains, and some poster color to achieve the dusty look.
