First Kill

Photos and Model by: Arvin Lim

This diorama is my first official project for BANKEE Philippines. Prior to this project I was watching the "One year war" Trilogy, and I was so absorbed by it that I planned to recreate the scene where Amuro impales Denim's Zaku right in the pilot's hatch in order to prevent the Zaku from exploding. I was a little bored with the Gundam's normal color so I decided to paint it in Real Type colors instead. :P

A) THE BASE

The diorama base was made from plaster of paris. Unlike my "Duel" Diorama the base of this diorama is a bit smaller in size, measuring about 10"x10" only. The reason why I built it on a smaller base is to put more emphasis on the kits in display rather on the diorama background.

As with my other diorama, the usual technique of sprinkling the surface with sand, and embedding the diorama components onto the plaster of paris before it was dried was used to impart some degree of realism.

B) ADDED DETAILS

The ruins of a hangar behind the two battling mobile suits was a pre casted 1/35 "warehouse ruin" diorama accessory, made of plaster of paris that I bought in one of the hobby shops near where I live. Although not of the appropriate scale, I think it perfectly simulates one of the ruined hangars from side 7 when the zaku's first attacked .

I used a copper wire that is about 4mm in diameter to hold the Zaku in mid air position, and embedded it under the base and behind the ruins, to create some sort of illusion that the zaku is really in mid air. :) I drilled a small hole under the groin armor and stuck the copper wire in so the zaku will be able to balance itself hganging from the copper wire.

To create the illusion of the zaku being impaled, I cut the beam saber into 2 parts, then by using a soldering iron, I made two shallow holes on the zaku that is about 5mm deep, one on the chest and one on the backpack. I then inserted one of the beam sabers on the hole in the chest, and the other part on the hole in the backpack of the zaku. Voila! instant impaled effect without having to create a hole that goes right through the zaku. :P

Finally I broke a strip of plaster into pieces, and scattered them all over the diorama to simulate debris from the ruins, and also added an upturned tree for added detail.

C) PAINTING

Some custom mixed sand brown poster color was used to color the whole diorama base and some parts (especially on the lower extremities) on the mobile suits to simulate some soil and dust. The ruins was painted with dirty white and concrete gray poster colors and the mobile suits where entirely handbrushed using Gunze Sangyo's Mr. Color Paint.

D) WEATHERING

Weathering on the ruins were done using black and brown chalk pastels to simulate smoke stains, and some poster color to achieve the dusty look.
