The Perfect Battle

Photos and Model by: Arvin Lim

This is my entry for the Bandai Asia Cup 2003, the first ever official Bandai contest to be held here in the Philippines. Incidentally this is also my entry for Cybermodelcomp.com's Diorama contest for 2003. The judging for the winners of the Asia cup will be on September 28, 2003, so as of this writing I am still anticipating the final results of the contest :) .

The concept was mainly taken from the "Battle of A Bao A Qu" where the Gundam and the Zeong both met their demise fighting each other. Instead of the regular MS, I used the Perfect Gundam that I was making a few months back. Of course any Perfect Battle wouldn't be complete without the main arch enemy the Perfect Zeong.

A) THE BASE

The Diorama was made mainly from carved styrofoam for the main shape, then coated with plaster of paris to achieve a more natural look for the rock formation. A rectangular hole was carved out of the styrofoam structure to allow some space, in order to simulate a hangar entrance. The flat panels for the floors and the hangar door were made from illustrations boards that were cut into the desired shapes. I made a zeon logo template and sprayed half a zeon insignia on the hangar door in order to create an illusionary half opened door effect. and printed some warning signs and labels for my dio to create a sense of scale between the diorama and the models.

B) ADDED DETAILS

I added a thrashed Zaku lying on the half opened door and a fallen GM on the Zeong's feet in order to simulate an ensuing battle between the feds and the zeeks. Both kits were heavily weathered with black chalk pastels to create a charred effect.

I also added a flying core fighter, complete with afterburner smoke made from cotton fiber. I colored the portion near the thrusters with clear yellow and orange to simulate afterburner thrusts.

To add more realism and sense of action, I added explosions on the edges of the diorama. The simulated explosions were made from some copper wire frames, that was covered with hot melt glue and tinted with clear colors from permanent markers

Finally I added markings and warning sign details to simulate a sense of scale between the surroundings and the MS. The warning signs that were added were printed out markings that I designed myself.

C) PAINTING

The colors for the diorama were sprayed on using Pylox flat black and Bosny cabinet gray spray paints. I sprayed on the cabinet gray first on the entirety of the diorama then sprayed on the shadings with flat black to darken the surface and make it more rock like.
