1/144 Kampfer Review

Plastic model kit by Bandai

Review by Arvin Lim

After long months of searching I was finally able to find the kit that I have long been waiting for, the 0080 1/144 scale version of the Kampfer! (isn't it too obvious that I love this scale?!)I was quite excited after acquiring this kit. But it turned out as a big disappointment after opening the box as the model was molded in an ugly teal color that is quite contrary to the dark blue color it is usually seen in. Of course this is no problem to those who paint their kits (like me), but to those who don't this is a major drawback.Although the color was a disappointment, the model itself is nicely molded, and with crisp details all over. I'll go about the description of each part separately.

The Head

The head is quite simple yet subtly detailed, and is made out of two halves. The other half holds the nice and long head spike. The neck assembly is made of a polycap and peg system that permits a limited mobility and allows the Kampfer to nod and look sideways at some degree. The monoeye is made of a translucent pink plastic that enhances the Kampfer's overall coolness, but it is necessary to paint the area surrounding the monoeye as it does not come with any kind of sticker to cover that particular area.

The Torso

The torso is made up of two halves, namely the front and the back. Needless to say the Kampfer comes with no waist poseability, which is a big minus point for the kit. Not only does it restrict the Kampfer's mobility, it also makes it looking a little stubby. There is also a clamp at the back of the crotch that holds the Kampfer's second shotgun.

The Backpack

The Kampfer doesn't really have a backpack, instead it is just part of the torso, that houses the boosters and hard points where the two bazookas can be stowed.

The Arms

The shoulder armor of the Kampfer is built differently from other kits. Instead of having two identical halves, it comes molded in inner and outer halves, and instead of the shoulder armor being attached directly to the shoulders, it is attached via a peg on the torso. This ensures that the Kampfer's shoulder armor will never ever droop like most other kits. The arms are fairly detailed, and comes with four sets of hands, two trigger and two fists. The forearms are curved and houses a polycap socket where the hands are inserted via a ball and socket assembly. (Note: The outstretched hand came from the HGUC Gelgoog Marine)

The Legs

The upper and lower legs are simple two piece affairs, that make up the inner and outer halves typical of most 1/144 kits. One thing that I did not like with this kit though was the fact that the knee plates are attached in the wrong position, instead of being attached at the lower leg, they are attached at the upper leg, giving the Kampfer irregular looking limbs when his legs are bent. The Kampfer's feet are tad a bit too big for him but it looks right in a strange way, this also gives the Kampfer a great stability that enables it to do great poses.

Weapons and Accessories

This is the most noteworthy feature of the kit is that it has a weapons load out rivaled only by the 08th MS team kits in terms of sheer quantity and variety. The Kampfer comes with two bazookas, these bazookas are almost the same as the giant bazookas that are included with the Rick-Dom II, two shotguns (with provisions for stock/non-stock versions), two sturmfausts (that attaches to the knees by small pegs), and a mean looking chain mine that are linked together by a polycap like material. Only rant I have with the weapons is that the chain mine is only one sided, this means that if you flip the chain mine on the opposite side, you can see the mine to polycap links which is a big letdown IMO.

Conclusion This kit isn't exactly what I expected it to be, and frankly I'm a bit disappointed. However with a little work, it builds into a very nice kit, that's worth every spent that I spent on it. Just look at the pics on this page and you'll know what I'm talking about^_^.
